Make your home smell like Christmas–no baking necessary!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, but what about the smell? Don’t think your home is done just because you’ve decked the halls! A beautiful scent of holiday cheer is essential for preparing your home for Christmas, and we’ve got the potpourri recipes you must try to prove it. From decorative dry potpourri to freshen up a single room or stovetop simmering recipes for making the whole house smell great, here’s how to make potpourri for yourself or as a gift for someone else!

Dry Christmas Potpourri

It’s easy to make a deliciously scented dry potpourri to place in small bags for guests or friends–or to keep in whatever room you’d like to freshen up. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 qt fir needles
  • 1 cup dried mixed fruit, shredded
  • 1 cup rosemary
  • 1/2 cup basil
  • 2 to 4 bay leaves, crumbled
  • 2 cups coarse salt (not iodized)

Simply mix all the ingredients together, then place in small calico drawstring bags. Feel free to stamp or paint the bags with Christmas motifs for a cute look!

Dry Spicy Potpourri

Here’s another great dry recipe, with quite a kick! You can bag this one as well–or stuff clear, transparent Christmas ornaments instead! This also makes for a great and unique Christmas gift. Here’s a list of ingredients:

  • 1/2 oz lemon verbena, crumbled
  • 2 oz crushed cloves
  • 1 oz bayberry powder
  • 1 oz sandalwood
  • 1 oz orris root powder
  • 6 drops clove oil
  • 4 drops lemon verbena oil
  • 4 drops sandalwood oil
  • 3 oz crushed pine needles
  • 2 oz crushed mint

Mix all your ingredients well, then place in a bag, ornament or bowl.

Simmering Potpourri

You can scent up the whole house by simmering a pot of potpourri on the stove! Let some holiday cheer permeate through the house without having to put in the effort of baking something sweet. Here’s the recipe:

  • 2 sliced apples
  • 3 pine cones
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cups of water

That’s it! Just let your ingredients simmer on low heat in the stove. Check in every now and then on the water level, and add more when it gets low. This will keep things smelling fresh–and not burnt!

Simmering Citrus Potpourri Gift

If you love the idea of a simmering potpourri and would love to gift it to a loved one, you can simply throw the ingredient in a mason jar. Here’s a recipe we love that’s perfect for canning:

  • 4 orange slices
  • ginger root chunks
  • cinnamon sticks
  • whole cloves
  • whole allspice

Layer each ingredient in the jar, then add some raffia in a nice bow to the lid. Feel free to make a tag with heating instructions–just simmer on low heat, like the last recipe–and you’re golden!
