Be Ready With This All Purpose Emergency Kit

I live in Earthquake country, where the reality is not “if” but “when” the next big earthquake will hit. No matter where you call home though, it is important to spend a few hours on a weekend and assemble a few kits for you and your family to ride out an earthquake or any natural disaster or emergency. I say multiple kits because you should have one in multiple places so no matter ‘where’ you are, you have supplies to carry you through that crisis. You need one: “To Go” in your bedroom, “On the Road” in your car and one to “To Hunker Down” near your home.

Here is what you need:

“To Go” In Your Bedroom: a Backpack of these supplies, so when a disaster like an earthquake strikes, you can grab, and go:

  • Bottled water
  • Extra Clothing
  • Sturdy Shoes
  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • Extra Batteries
  • Radio
  • Toilet Tissue
  • Non Perishable Food: protein bars, dried fruit, crackers cookies

“On The Road” Car Kit: A Backpack of similar supplies for your “To Go” but add:

  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Street Maps
  • Sharpie Pen
  • Paper and Pen

“Hunker Down” near home:

Use a large trash can with a lid and store from the bottom up:

Bottom:

  • Blankets
  • Sleeping Bag/Tarp

  • Diapers/Toilet Tissue
  • Heavy Duty Trash bags for disposal

Type out a list of contents and put in a plastic sheet protector and put this on the very top of this container with the date you last inspected. Note that while some of the canned foods can last a year, the water and batteries need to be replaced every 3-6 months.
