It’s not just for baking!
Perhaps you’ve noticed that baking soda is the cornerstone in all Arm & Hammer products. It makes you wonder how many different uses you can find for baking soda! While you can buy lots of cleaning and deodorizing products that use baking soda, all it takes is some water and baking soda to clean around the house or even cure some ailments. We’ve got the low-down on how you can use this modest pantry ingredient all around the house.
1. Clean the dishwasher.
Cleaning a dishwasher is super simple with baking soda! Simply run an empty cycle using baking soda instead of a detergent. You can use this method for cleaning your coffee maker as well!
2. Clean yourself.
In need of a luxurious bath? Baking soda is an excellent ingredient for bath soaks! Just add about half a cup to your bath to wash away the oils on your skin.
3. Brush your teeth.
Out of toothpaste? Looking for something fluoride-free? Just add 3% hydrogen peroxide to baking soda, then dip your toothbrush in the solution. Voila! Get to brushing!
4. Clean the floors.
Don’t mop with just water or dangerous chemicals if you can avoid it. Make a great floor cleaner by mixing half a cup of baking soda with a bucket of warm water.
5. Clean cloth diapers.
Cloth diapers are great for being re-usable and cutting waste. But they aren’t fun to clean! You can easily wash cloth diapers by letting them soak in a solution of 2 cups of water with a half cup of baking soda mixed in.
6. Freshen up laundry.
Brighten up your laundry by adding a cup of baking soda to the load (but include your usual amount of detergent). Your clothes will look brighter and cleaner than ever before!
7. Freshen up a carpet.
Is your carpet or rug getting musty? Even whacking or vacuuming out the dust can leave it stale. If this is the case, sprinkle some baking soda on it, and let it sit overnight. Vacuum the rug, and it will be nice and clean.
8. Freshen up a sponge.
Using a sponge that hasn’t been cleaned in a while can make you question just how clean your dishes are after rinsing them. To freshen them up, just soak them in baking soda mixed with water.
Say goodbye to deodorant, and simply throw some baking soda on instead. No odors, sweat–or pesky deodorant residue and side effects.
10. Deodorize the litter box.
Litter boxes can get surprisingly smelly. When you next clean, put some baking soda down on the bottom of the box. You can also sprinkle some on the litter to keep things extra-fresh.
You don’t have to buy fancy exfoliates or scrubs if you have baking soda on hand. Just mix 3 parts baking soda with one part water, and rub it onto your skin for an instant exfoliate.
12. Get rid of dandruff.
Having dandruff doesn’t have to mean spending extra money on a specialty shampoo. Just replace your usual shampoo with baking soda, and in a few weeks your dandruff will be gone!
13. Use as an antacid.
Heartburn got you down? Half a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with a half cup of water will have you feeling fine after any meal.
14. Relief from the elements.
Bug bites, sunburn and itchy poison ivy are all very common ailments–especially for children who love to play outside. But another thing these afflictions have in common is their cure: baking soda! Mix some with water for a solution that will soothe symptoms from bites and sunburn.
15. Say goodbye to weeds.
Cracks in driveways, sidewalks and other pavement are great shelter for weeds to grow. Discourage unwanted foliage by sprinkling some baking soda in these cracks, as they’ll become unable to grow.
